General overview:

Combigan eye drop is an ophthalmic solution to control glaucoma (increased eye pressure). It is a unique combination of two ocular medications i.e. Brimonidine and Timolol; both are helpful in lowering high pressure in the eye. Generic Brimonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist while Timolol is a beta-blocker. Combigan eye drop is approved to lower high eye pressure when the use of beta-blocker eye drops alone is not enough.

What do you need to know before using Combigan eye drops?

  • If you have a history of respiratory problems like asthma, severe chronic obstructive bronchitis, never use Combigan eye drops.
  • If you are hypersensitive to Brimonidine or Timolol, then avoid the use of this ophthalmic solution.
  • If you have heart problems, for example, heart failure, low heart rate, heartbeat disorders (except controlled by a pacemaker).

Which other medications affect the working of Combigan eye drops?

  • Sleeping pills or anti-anxiety drugs
  • Antidepressants like monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors
  • Antidiabetics
  • Drugs to treat heartburn or stomach ulcers
  • Medications to treat high blood pressure

What is the recommended dose of Combigan eye drops?

The suggested dose is one drop of Combigan, two times in a day about 12 hours apart. Avoid altering the dose or never discontinue its use without speaking to your physician. If you are using other eye drops as well then leave at least 5 minutes between using Combigan eye drop and other eye drops. 

What are the side effects that crop up with the use of Combigan eye drops?

Side effects include irritation, stinging or pain in the eye, inflammation of the eyelid, itching of eye and eyelid, redness in the eye, sticky and dry eyes and vision disturbances. 

What are the safety measures that should be kept in mind while using Combigan eye drops?

  • Combigan eye drops should not be used in children less than 2 years of age up to 17 years.
  • If you have recently undergone any eye surgery to lower the pressure in your eye, then avoid the use of this combination ophthalmic medication.
